Strategy Based Instruction
Reading
What cognitive and metacognitive processes do readers engage in as they read?
How do readers self-monitor and self-correct and remain actively engaged as
they read?
How can teachers model and gradually release these processes to students? How
can teachers ensure that independent reading is meaningful and purposeful?
How can teachers ensure that students read a balance of fiction and nonfiction?
Strategy Based Reading (SBR) offers explicit, systematic instruction in the
cognitive process of reading (both fiction and nonfiction). Bilingual, regular
education and special education students can see the "secrets of learning" once
given SBR. When shown how to use these research-based strategies effectively,
students gain the ability and flexibility to become active readers, complete complex
tasks, and perform on state exams.
